The works of Lessing, Goethe, and Schiller were not only considered first-rate subjects of instruction, but also helped shape teaching methodology. The author shows the extent to which the ideological core of historical didactics goes back to the reception of the "classics," and how didactic considerations influenced the reading of such works.
